Excel 2008 for Mac Misbehaving - text is overwriting! Help!

I'm not the most savvy Excel user so I'm not really sure how to explain this so here goes.

I'm creating a pretty basic document with some calculation and text in different cells. Suddenly I click on a cell and attempt to write some text and it will only except one letter in the cell. In other words, if I try to write the word "Cell" I type the "C" and then when I hit "e" it just overwrites the "C." ....and so on. Whatever letter I hit last is the letter in the cell. I can to to any other cell in the document and it will do the same thing. I can even open a new sheet in that document and same thing. I can go to a previous cell and cut and paste a word into a the misbehaving cells. Progress has come to a complete hault! Can anyone help!

Not a Mac user so it will be tough to give any correct ideas but in general I would try.

    1. Seeing if it is a display issue and re-loading any drivers or changing the resolution of your screen
    2. Re-loading Excel or running the detect and repair option

    Just a couple of ideas.
